Classroom Happenings 12/17/18

A week of excitement coming up as the kids anticipate the holiday break. We will be trying to make this week as routine as possible to keep some sense of calm.

December 20: 9:15 -10:30 Polar express party. We are planning crafts, games, and snacks related to the Polar Express theme and will be combining all of the 3rd-grade classes. If you volunteered to help at the party please be to school no later then 8:30 so we have time to tell you which station you will be working at and what you will be doing there. Also, make sure any items you are donating are sent into school by Thursday so

Math: We have been working hard on understanding elapsed time. This is a very difficult skill for 3rd graders. They are seeing this for the first time and will see it again in 4th and 5th grade. If they are unable to master this skill this year, it probably just means they are not developmentally ready for it. We will continue with a bit more time themed activities as well as some holiday-themed math activities.

Writing: We will not be able to get our informational reports completed by the end of the week, but hopefully can come back in January and just put on the finishing touches to our final drafts.

Spelling: There will be no spelling list this week. Instead, the kids will be given a list of holiday words and have some fun learning to spell them.

Social Studies: The kids were introduced to Michigan’s economic activities last week. We will also take a look at Michigan’s Public goods and services and how we pay for those with taxes, fees, and fines.

Reading: Since we are having the Polar Express party this week, I have decided to do a mini unit on books written by Chris VanAllsburg. His books are excellent for teaching the skill of questioning. The kids usually enjoy reading all of his well written and illustrated books.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. It is best to contact me via email. I check that frequently, so will be able to respond in a more timely manner. nflory@hpseagles.net
