Classroom Happenings 1-21-19

BRRRRR! Winter has officially arrived. Please make sure your child comes to school with warm clothing for going outside. If the weather is 0° or above we have outdoor recess.

Math: On Friday we tested on unit 3. Overall the kids did well. Elapsed time and measuring to the 1/4 inch proved to be the most difficult for them. For some of the kids, they are just not developmentally ready for these concepts. It will come in time. Unit 4 will involve place value and adding and subtracting with three-digit numbers that require borrowing and carrying.

Writing: Thank you for making sure your child completed his/her informational report. We celebrated them on Friday and began our next writing unit. The kids will be writing a realistic fiction story.

Spelling: Your child will bring home words to study for unit 14 on Monday. This week’s focus is on the consonant blends (ck, ct, ft, ld, mp, nd) Attached is the Unit 14 list of words. Week 14 PDF

Social Studies: History lesson one taught the kids how to be historians. Now that they have accomplished that, we will be learning about the first people of Michigan, the Native Americans.

Reading: The kids should all be done with their first chapter book in the series they are reading. On Monday, they will be given the second book in the series. As they work their way through the second book, we will be comparing it to the first book and noticing how the main character changes.
