Classroom Happenings 1/14/19

We are back in the swing of things and ready to do the bulk of our learning during this long stretch before spring break. Even though this seems like the winter that never was, it is still quite cold out. Please remind your child that he/she needs to bundle up for recess. Several of them feel if there is no snow that they don’t need to wear a coat. Hats, mittens and warm coats are still needed.

Math: We will finish this unit by Friday and test early next week. For the most part, the kids have been doing well with this measurement unit. Telling time to the minute and telling elapsed time were the most difficult. Some extra practice at home in these areas would be helpful.

Writing: Your child should have brought home his/her informational report final draft pieces if they were not finished. Please have them complete it and return it to school by Tuesday morning. We will be reading each other’s pieces during writing on Tuesday. Our next unit will be writing a realistic fiction piece. Most of the kids enjoy the chance to make up a story of their own.

Spelling: Your child will bring home words to study for unit 13 on Monday. This week’s focus is on the consonant blends (pr, pl, sh, th) Attached is the Unit 13 list of words.

Social Studies: Our next unit in social studies will be Michigan History. This is usually a favorite among the students and certainly of the teacher’s. It is a large unit, so there will be many quizzes on shorter sections in history.

Reading: We started book clubs last week and the kids are enjoying their first books. The goal is to finish the first book this week and move on to the second book in the series to be able to see how the main character’s personality traits can be seen throughout a series.
